TrueMargin

FAQ

Answers about accuracy, imports, and how True Margin calculates profit.

How does True Margin calculate profit?+

True Margin starts with the money captured from each order, then subtracts fees, refunds, taxes, and shipping charges recorded in Shopify. We layer in your unit costs so profit reflects real margin, not just revenue. The result is a per-order and overall view that matches your actual payout reality.

Why do you import Shopify Payments / Balance CSV?+

The payout files include the exact fees, chargebacks, and adjustments Shopify applies before money hits your bank. Importing the Balance CSV lets us reconcile every order to the payout, so profit is based on what you actually received. It also helps catch discrepancies that are hard to see in Shopify alone.

Does it work without Shopify Payments?+

Yes. You can still track margins using order data and your unit costs. Importing payouts improves accuracy, but if you use a different payment provider, you can start without them and add additional data later.

How are refunds handled?+

Refunds are pulled from Shopify and mapped back to the original order. We adjust profit by removing refunded revenue and associated fees. This keeps net margin accurate even with partial refunds or exchanges.

How do unit costs (COGS + shipping) work?+

You can set product-level costs or import them in bulk. We use those costs on each order and add per-order shipping costs if provided. This creates a true landed cost so your profit reflects what you spent to fulfill.

What data do you sync from Shopify?+

We sync orders, refunds, taxes, shipping charges, and line items needed for margin calculations. Customer details are not required for the profit view. You remain in control of what is connected and can disconnect at any time.

Do I need Meta Ads integration?+

No. Meta Ads is optional and only needed if you want ad spend and ROAS inside True Margin. Many merchants start with Shopify data and add ad integrations later.

What if my data is incomplete?+

True Margin will still show profit based on the data you provide and highlight gaps that affect accuracy. You can add missing costs or payout files over time. Each update recalculates your margins automatically.

Is my data secure?+

We use read-only Shopify access and encrypted data storage. Your credentials are never exposed, and we only sync the data needed to calculate profit. You can revoke access from Shopify at any time.

Is this for agencies or multiple stores?+

Multi-store support is coming soon. Today, True Margin is optimized for single-store merchants who want a clear profit view. If you manage multiple stores, reach out and we can share the roadmap.
